The Physiology Department has recently initiated a Postdoctoral Fellow Development Program that integrates Postdoctoral Fellows and Research Track Faculty into various aspects of academic life. This program not only helps the fellows decide on their particular career path, but also gives them an advantage when they both search for, and ultimately procure, their positions. Aspects of this program include monthly meetings where their research is presented and discussed. These meetings will also showcase speakers that have chosen career paths outside of the typical academic path as well as other relevant presentations. We will also provide workshops in grant writing, scientific presentations, interviewing, etc. In addition, the Department of Physiology provides awards (on a competitive basis) to present their work at scientific meetings (2 per year) and will also subsidize stipends for postdoctoral fellows who receive Independent Fellowships from external funding agencies. Finally, we are developing a program where highly-competitive postdoctoral fellows can transition to an independent position for their final year in the department. Postdoctoral Fellows are arguably one of the most important components in an active scientific laboratory. While we strive to provide an environment where they can maintain the requisite high level of productivity necessary for the next step in their career, we realize there is more we can (and will) do to prepare and encourage the postdoctoral fellow for an independent and successful career.
