Peter J. Hornsby, Ph.D.

Professor

Personal Statement:

My research interests are in regenerative medicine, as described below. I also serve as the Co-Director of the San Antonio Nathan Shock Center and as Co-Leader of the Research Career Development Core of the San Antonio Older Americans Independence Center (Pepper Center). My teaching activities focus on gastrointestinal physiology, both within the Medical School and the Graduate School.

Research

Regenerative Medicine – Stem Cell Delivery. Our research focuses on modes of stem cell delivery to exert a therapeutic effect in age-related diseases. Most recently the lab’s research has concerned intranasal delivery of mesenchymal stem cells to the brain.

“Human mesenchymal stem cells crossing the cribriform plate into the brain in a mouse. Human stem cells were labeled with quantum dots (red) and administered intranasally. Two hours later they are seen crossing the cribriform plate in this image (arrows). In (b) nuclei have been stained green. (c) is an overlay of (a) and (b). cp = cribriform plate; fo = fila olfactoria; lp = lamina propria; oe = olfactory epithelium; onl = olfactory nerve layer”
