In broad terms, Physiology is the study of the dynamic functional relationships that exist within cells, tissues, organs and, ultimately, the whole organism. Consistent with the mission of UTHSCSA, the teaching and research activities of the Department of Physiology are concerned with the study of these relationships relevant to human health and disease.

Satisfactory completion of all required courses and the submission and defense of a thesis are required for obtaining the M.S. Degree. As for all graduate students at the UTHSCSA, the Rules and Regulations in the current UTHSCSA catalog will prevail.

• Increase understanding of the molecular, cellular, and integrative mechanisms of human bodily functions.
  
  
• Train in the methodologies of physiological research.

• Reading, classroom lectures, and discussions about the mechanisms of bodily function.
• Training in laboratory skills necessary for physiological research.
• Analysis of computer and laboratory demonstrations of physiological principles.
• Performance of short laboratory experiments that illustrate physiological principles.
• Discussion of selected papers that highlight major discoveries in the history of physiology.
• Participation in ongoing experiments in a physiology research laboratory.
• Performing a research project that will be the basis of the thesis for the M.S. Degree.
