Manzoor Bhat, M.S., Ph.D.

The Department of Physiology in the School of Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio is renowned for its seminal contributions in many scientific areas including cardiovascular physiology, neurophysiology and the physiological basis of aging. Using sophisticated genetic and molecular tools, our scientists are unraveling the fundamental mechanisms that underlie tissue and cellular physiology; and how these processes are compromised in injury and disease. Understanding the genetic and molecular basis of physiological processes at the cellular and organismal level is a challenge for physiologists and biologists alike, and this knowledge is central to our ability to effectively design and develop therapeutic interventions to human diseases. We have an outstanding group of faculty working with postdoctoral fellows, graduate students and support staff carrying out cutting edge research in many scientific areas. As Chair, my goal is to enhance the existing research base and expand the Department’s reach into new and challenging scientific areas providing the best environment for faculty and trainees to thrive and succeed through scholarship, innovation and collaboration to achieve the highest level of scientific excellence and productivity; and most importantly contribute to medical and graduate education.
